To all the darling readers seeking a recap of this week’s news, here is the Sunday Summary of the second of March.
The Zelensky and Trump Clash
On Friday, the 28th of February, what was originally intended to be a peaceful meeting at the White House between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump was concluded disastrously, with the two leaders quarreling over the Russo-Ukrainian War before the global media.
The meeting was organised on the grounds of signing an agreement between Ukraine and the United States to jointly develop Ukraine's rich natural resources. This was seen as a potential blooming of stronger relations between the two countries by both Ukraine and its European allies. However, after the dispute that developed between the two leaders, the room where the agreement lies was not entered by either of them.
President Zelensky saw the meeting as an opportunity to discuss the war. He spoke up for his country and against its invader, and asked Trump not to side with the ‘killer’ Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump, who is known for his fondness of flattery and pretense during meetings as such, accused Zelensky’s straightforward, determined speech of disrespect. Thus, Ukraine’s relations with its most crucial wartime ally reached a low point. It is reported that the Ukrainian President was told to take leave early.
The full recording of the meeting can be found here.
Pope Francis’ Sudden Respiratory Episode
On Friday, Pope Francis suffered a sudden episode of respiratory difficulty. It resulted in him being put on a breathing machine.
A quiet night followed without any troubling symptoms, and by Saturday morning, the Pope was reported to have continued his usual routine of drinking coffee and reading the newspapers. However, the prognosis for Friday’s attack has not yet been established, and the Pope is not out of danger yet. The Vatican source shared that doctors expect to know more about his condition in the upcoming day or two.
Not being the first of its nature, this episode has caused concern, as many cannot help but ask questions such as “will Pope Francis resign?” and “what happens when a Pope dies?”.
Future Conference in Switzerland on Occupied Palestinian Territories
This week, Switzerland has made plans to host a conference on the seventh of March, sending out invitations to participate to all 196 parties to the Geneva Conventions.
The conference will be held on the grounds of the situation of civilians living in Israeli-occupied territories. After the fifteen-month conflict between Israel and Gaza, which has left behind little but ruin and thousands of deaths, a ceasefire is currently being held.
Nonetheless, Israel’s clearing out tens of thousands from camps in the West Bank in recent weeks has raised fears of potential annexation in the future.
