Sunday Summary - 12th January 2025: For what happened in the world this week, where to begin?

Fires spread over Los Angeles due to global warming. In only four days of fires, more than 179,000 people were evacuated from the area, and six fires are ongoing in the city. This shows that sustainable measures should be taken to avoid climate catastrophes from happening and multiplying.

Regarding women’s rights, there was another setback in Afghanistan. The Taliban banned women from seeing a doctor if it was a man in a certain region. In 2024, women were withdrawn from the right to medical training; this entails that doctors are almost exclusively male and that therefore women will suffer from a lack of health care.

Regarding the Middle East, the United States is working on a hostage deal release in Gaza before Trump's presidential inauguration. The director of the CIA attested that the deal should be done in a couple of weeks.

Regarding the Ukraine/Russia conflict, Ukraine captured two North Korean soldiers in Russia that are given proper healthcare. Usually, North Korean wounded soldiers are killed to erase any proof of North Korean investment in this war. A report from the White House stated that North Korea was experiencing a lot of casualties in this war.

Regarding European news, Jean Marie Le Pen, the founder of the predominant extreme right party in France, the Rassemblement National, died this week. French activists hoping that his ideas would go down with him, celebrated his death, in Paris, hundreds of people assembled in République to celebrate Jean Marie Le Pen's death, furthermore, many French people relayed this news with joy on social media. The French interior minister condemned those celebrations stating that nothing justifies dancing on a corpse.

The US and the UK strengthened sanctions on the Russian oil industry. The Trump administration is putting pressure to stop this ongoing war, therefore the impact of those sanctions will be seen under the Trump presidency. Furthermore, Trump said he arranged a meeting with Putin pursuing his goal to stop the war before January 20th.

Last but not least, you may have heard of one particular video published this week by the founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. Four days ago, in a video published on his Instagram, Zuckerberg, hoping to make himself the advocate of freedom of expression, announced he would delete all forms of fact-checking overall Meta (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Threats, WhatsApp) platforms. This action, claimed “shameful” by U.S. President Biden, was instead applauded by the newly elected Donald Trump. This whole scheme seems to be aligning perfectly with Trump's old speeches of “Silicon Valley tyrants” colluding to “silence the American people”. Aligning with Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg now officially positioned himself as the new puppet of Trump's war on what he calls “fake news” and “disinformation”.
